HOW OUR WOODWORM TREATMENT WORKS

1. Make an Enquiry. Call us or fill in our online form, and we’ll be in touch to discuss your situation. Just let us know where you are, what’s going on, and we’ll see how we can help.

2. Inspection & Survey. We’ll arrange a visit to your property to carry out a thorough inspection, identify the type of pest, and assess the extent of any damage. From there, we’ll put a plan in place to get your home back into tip-top shape.

3. Treatment. Depending on the severity of the problem, our specialists may use a spray, injection, or paste treatment to address the issue. Every method is applied professionally, safely, and with minimal disruption. We’ll always leave your home spick-and-span and aim to be out of your hair as quickly as possible.

4. Timber Preservation. Once treatment is complete, we’ll ensure any affected timber is repaired, replaced, and treated to prevent reinfestation and safeguard your home for years to come.

5. Aftercare. We’re not the type to just walk away once the job’s done. If you have any questions or run into any issues, we’re only a phone call away and always ready to provide ongoing support and peace of mind.

SIGNS OF WOODWORM

Knowing what to look for is key to early treatment. The most common signs include:

  • Small round holes in your woodwork, similar to the holes in a dartboard.
  • Fine, powdery dust around these holes (this is known as frass).
  • Crumbly edges to boards and joists.
  • Adult beetles emerging from the holes or present around the house.
  • Even if you can’t see any holes, you might also find frass escaping from the back or underside of old furniture. Again, this suggests active woodworm larvae.

TYPES OF WOODWORM TREATMENT

The treatment we carry out depends on the type of woodworm beetle, the extent of the damage, and the condition of the timber. Before any work begins, our specialists must identify the species present, as different wood-boring insects require different approaches.

Surface Spray Treatment

For less severe infestations, a chemical spray is applied to the surface of the affected timber. This kills emerging beetles and prevents them from reproducing and laying new eggs, protecting the wood from further damage.

Injection Treatment

In cases where the infestation is more advanced, we drill small holes into the timber and inject insecticide directly into the affected areas. This helps the treatment penetrate deeper into the wood to reach the larvae inside.

Paste Application

A thick paste or gel can be applied to the surface of the wood for deeper penetration. This method is often used for larger beams or structural timbers, where surface spraying alone would not quite do the job.

WOODWORM FAQs

1. What does woodworm look like?

Woodworm is the larvae of wood-boring beetles. The larvae themselves are creamy-white, C-shaped grubs that live inside the wood. Signs include tiny round holes, fine powdery dust, and weakened or brittle wood.

2. Can I treat woodworm myself?

Minor woodworm infestations can sometimes be treated with DIY woodworm sprays or solutions, but it depends on the extent of the damage. For larger or active infestations, professional treatment is recommended to fully resolve the issue and prevent it from coming back.

3. How long does woodworm treatment take?

The duration of treatment depends on the severity and type of woodworm. Typically, a professional treatment takes a few hours for inspection and application, but the insecticide may need time to fully penetrate the wood and kill the larvae, which could take several weeks.

4. How to tell if woodworm is active?

Active woodworm infestations typically exhibit fresh, light-coloured exit holes, fine powdery frass, and, in some cases, beetles can be seen emerging from the wood. Old or inactive infestations generally have darker holes and lack fresh dust.

5. How serious is woodworm in a house?

Woodworm infestations can start as relatively minor and confined to one or more pieces of furniture. However, more severe or active infestations, especially in structural timbers, can weaken floors, beams, joints, and other crucial wooden frameworks in your home. If you suspect any structural wood is affected by woodworm, a professional assessment is highly recommended.
